What Makes Star Wars One Of The Biggest Movie Franchises!

If you ask any geek or a Sci-Fi nerd about their favorite movie, there are high chances that you will get Star Wars as the reply. A Star Wars movie is never about the franchise, it’s about a space saga of debatable greatness. The Star Wars movie franchise has always been way ahead of its time.

For everyone who grew up watching Star Wars, all their prequels and sequels have a classic storytelling which goes well even to this date. It is this movie—and probably, the only franchise—that gave Sci-Fi a different paradigm, making it a globally appreciated genre. The franchise seemed to have figured out a perfect balance between action, romance, angst, and of course, science.

During the era when mankind had just begun to explore interstellar space and the unchartered territories of universe, Star Wars had already familiarized people with intergalactic travel on planets that were governed by multiple suns. Although the sets and props used then didn’t seem as realistic as they do today, it was the sheer imagination of filmmakers that propelled the franchise to “galaxies far far away.”

If you have not yet watched the 13 installments of Star Wars, then it is difficult to talk about the characters and the heart-wrenching plot without ruining the whole movie experience. It is one of those franchises that builds up on villain and anti-heroes, letting them win the plot once in a while. The storyline turning from good, bad, worst, to awful is what made audiences hooked to the whole franchise.

One of the reasons that made the Star Wars franchise larger than life is the fact that everything from the characters to the props, spiraled out into a merchandise-frenzy mania. Lightsabers, life-size Storm Troopers, Luke Skywalker, Yoda and Darth Vader action figures, you name it and you will find them at the nearest toy and retail stores.

Filmmaker George Lucas stated that much of the film’s core plot was inspired from the then popular Flash Gordon serials. However, for many, it was the movie they grew up with, and the concept of the movie was fresh and exceptional and this was the reason why the audience was hooked onto it. The idea of lightsabers, telekinesis, and space battles left audiences in complete awe. One of the key elements that made the franchise so appreciable was its buildup. The joy of seeing the plot unfold progressively in front of your eyes outstrips the entire movie experience. It was the buildup of the story that got many hooked to the franchise as they would always wait for the sequel.

Statistically speaking, to this date, the entire Star Wars franchise has grossed a behemoth $7.5 billion worldwide. The budget of the entire franchise is a staggering $838 million which Disney brought from LucasFilms for $4 billion in the year 2012. Star Wars: The Force Awakens witnessed the highest grossing opening weekend worldwide, making it the third highest grossing film of all time.

All the movies of this franchise taught us the importance of the value of stories: it warned the viewers about the dangers of fascism and greed and taught them about the need for patience. Every Star Wars movie has a plot which is not only a perfect alibi for human wisdom but also has an ability to explain the detailing and brilliance of our universe. Any great story is one that would make you picture yourself in it. Certainly, Star Wars made almost everyone want to be a Jedi. The craze behind the franchise can be figured out from the fact you will find a large number of fan theories online that would have minor characters and subplots as their major discussion points. May 4th is celebrated as Star Wars Day which has a punning catchphrase, “May the 4th be with you” (relating from the iconic line in the movie, “May the force be with you”).

Solo: A Star Wars story is an upcoming second installment to the Star Wars Anthology which follows Star Wars: Rogue One that was released in December 2016.
