How do I Know If I Have to File a Tax Return for 2010?

Taxes are a simple fact of life – there’s really no getting around them.  However, not everyone has to file a tax return.  How do you know if you have to file taxes for 2010?  Here are a few tips to help you determine if you do need to file taxes for last year.

First, if your gross income was more than $9,350 for the year, you are single and under the age of 65, you must file taxes for 2010.  If you are married and filing jointly, are younger than 65 and your gross income was at least $18,700, you have to file taxes.  If you and your spouse are both over the age of 65 and your income is at least $20,900, you have to file taxes.  If only one spouse is over 65, then your joint income cannot exceed $19,800 for the year, or you have to file taxes.

If you are filing your taxes as married but filing separately, you have to have an income of less than $3,650, or you have to file taxes.  If you are filing as the head of household, you have to file taxes if your income is greater than $12,000.  For those 65 and over and filing as head of household, then the limit is $13,400.

If you qualify as a widow or widower and your income is at least $15,050, you have to file taxes.  If you’re over 65, your limit is $16,150.
