How Do You File an Extension for Your Federal Income Tax Return?

Tax time has a way of sneaking up on you.  For busy people, it can be easy to forget that taxes are due.  If you are approaching the deadline for your taxes and have no hope of getting them in on time, you can file for a tax extension with the IRS.

There are several ways in which you can file an extension on your taxes.  The first is to visit the IRS website (IRS.gov) and use their online form to file an extension on your taxes free of charge.  You can also file for an extension through TurboTax Online, as well as through several other tax companies at no charge to you.

If you prefer to do things manually, you can file an extension on your taxes by filling out Tax Form 4868.  Fill out this form and then mail it to the IRS before the deadline for your taxes (April 15).  Once you have filed for an extension, you have six months to complete and file your taxes.  After this time, you will be considered late and the IRS will begin to assess interest and penalties on your return.

For those in the military or living in another country, there is a longer extension available in some instances.  The IRS References section on their website will help you learn how long you have and if this applies to your situation.
