How to Improve Your Relationship With Your Boss

If you’ve been having issues with your boss at work, you are probably interested in improving your working relationship in order to guarantee the success of your position.

Here are a few tips to make things better in the office.

First up, doing a great job is one of the best ways to make sure that you have a good relationship with your supervisor or boss.  You should try to do you work accurately and quickly, and when you have a question, make sure that you get your answers before you begin a new project.  If you get halfway through a project before you start asking questions, this will cast doubts on the competency of the first half of your project.

If there are any conflicts occurring, sit down and communicate to express your feelings and to clear up any misunderstandings.  Try to get on the same page with your boss, and to remain a team with your co-workers. Arrive at work early and stay a few minutes later if your boss or coworkers need help.  Volunteering for weekend overtime is a great workplace relationship enhancer.

Take the time out to do the small things that mean the most.  Stock up on office supplies for the department without being asked, or surprise your team with a free pizza delivery for lunch or a basket of fresh bagels for breakfast.  See if you can get some added responsibilities or to increase your quarterly goals.  This will help you to earn the respect of your boss, and your relationship will improve because of this.

It is also important that you are respectful of your boss’s work decisions if you want to foster a good relationship.  By all means come up with suggestions for making the company or department run more efficiently, but make sure that you run everything by your boss first before implementing any changes. Going behind their back to make changes that you think are right is just going to weaken the relationship you have.

While your boss should give you credit for the work that you do and the ideas you come up with, you need to remember that they are ultimately responsible for the success or failure of the department.  Don’t bask in the spotlight.  Be humble, and tell people you couldn’t have done it without your boss’s help or his helpful suggestions.
