How to Start Your Own Small Business Decorating Cakes

If you are interested in starting a business decorating cakes, you’d be surprised at how easy it can be.  You can hone your cake decorating skills at the local craft shop or specialty kitchen store.  Many of them offer cake decorating classes on a regular basis, and even if you are already an experienced baker, it is a good opportunity to practice and get feedback from other bakers and hobbyists.

Once you’re ready, you will need an approved location to cook in.  Churches often have commercial kitchens that you can rent out to do the food handling for your business.  There are also rental commercial kitchens in many towns for caterers, hobbyists, and business owners.  This will keep you on the right side of health regulations, and it will keep the paraphernalia of your business out of your living space.

In order to advertise your business, you can take out an ad in the paper, and be sure to connect with internet sites whose adverts are geo-targeted to your local community, such as Craigslist.  Be sure to re-post your internet ads regularly so your business stays at the top of the list.

You can also generate word of mouth advertising by offering to decorate cakes for the children of friends and family. Take photos of each finished cake, so you’ll have some shots for your fliers and internet site.  Print some business cards at a local print shop and tuck a few inside each cake box when you deliver them, and you’re well on your way to getting started as a professional cake decorator.
