Top 10 Signs That Your Partner is Lying to You About Money

One of the most common problems modern-day couples face is dealing with their combined finances.  Unfortunately, a large percentage of people lie to their partners about money, and this causes deeper problems in the relationship and is one of the leading cause of divorce.

The following are the top 10 signs that your partner might be deceiving you when it comes to their finances:

Sign #1: Changing the Subject

If your partner changes the subject every time the topic of money comes up, you might want to push the subject.  Avoidance is a mechanism many people use to escape having to tell the truth – which is usually that they’re flat broke.

Sign #2: Becoming Defensive

If your loved one becomes defensive when you try to talk about money issues, something is likely very wrong.  Don’t pry too much, but certainly realize that there are big red flags that need dealing with.

Sign #3: Lying to Others

If you notice that your partner frequently lies to friends or family about money, there is a good chance that they are lying to you as well.  Even small ‘white’ lies such as “the check’s in the mail,” or fibbing about how much an item really cost are signs for concern, especially if your partner is usually truthful with their nearest and dearest.

Sign #4: Taking Charge – Whether You want Them To Or Not

If you partner insists on handling all of the finances, you should double-check them to see if they are hiding anything.  Look into any recent debt, new credit cards or unpaid bills.

Sign #5: Look to Their Parents

You need to get to know their parents.  Money problems and deception, like many family problems, can often be passed along to children.  If their folks have big money issues, your partner might have these as well.

Sign #6: Frequent Overspending

Consider how much your partner spends on a monthly basis – you don’t need an exact figure, a good guess will do the trick.  Is it in line with their income?  If they are spending too much, chances are that no matter how great their credit line is, this is eventually going to become an issue.

Sign #7: Beware of Secrecy

Watch for changes in behavior and secretive actions that are unlike your partner’s normal behavior.  If they’re acting strangely and you suddenly have a new 42″ Plasma-screen TV in the front room which they claim they “won in a competition”, chances are they’ve just done something very, very naughty with their credit.

Sign #8: Check Their Browsing History

Online purchases can be difficult to track.  If your partner is constantly buying items online and then hiding them, check their computer to see what their browsing history indicates.  If it is empty, this means they have been wiping their internet history to cover their tracks. This indicates that they could be spending online without your knowledge.

Sign #9: Listen to Your Gut Instincts

When your gut tells you that something is wrong, you should always listen.  Intuition is there for when the evidence isn’t in front of your face.

Sign #10: Learn From the Past

If you’ve caught them lying about money in the past, there is a good chance that it is going to happen again.

The fact that your partner is having money issues may not mean they are a bad person, but if you plan on getting more involved with them in the future, it is wise to gently suggest that a practical solution be found for their money mismanagement.  You can find good debit councilors out there who can help you talk to your partner about managing their money, or in more extreme cases, you might suggest relationship therapy to get your partner to talk about the root of his or her problems.
