Cooking Tips for the Busy Person: How to Make a Quick Breakfast on the Go

If you’re like most of us, you don’t have time to spend 30 minutes making breakfast.  But rather than skipping the most important meal of the day for a quick cup of coffee, or spending a fortune at breakfast cafes and fast food joints, you can use these tips to make a quick and cheap breakfast on-the-go.

Quick Breakfast Tip – Prepare

Preparation is the key to success for nearly everything.  This applies to breakfast as well.  There are many types of meals you can make beforehand, and quickly heat or put together to consume in the morning.

For instance, you can scramble some eggs, heat up some sausage and wrap it in a few tortillas.  You can pop these in a freezer and nuke them in the microwave for a quick sausage-egg wrap!

Another delicious breakfast food is hash-browns. Grate up some potatoes (leave the skin on for more nutrients) during the day and separate them into burger-like piles.  Much like a hamburger patty, you can shape the potatoes and fry them on medium high heat for 10 minutes or pop them in an oven at 400 degrees for 30 minutes.  You can then freeze these and heat them up in the morning for a fast breakfast.

You can also hard-boil and peel some eggs and leave them in the fridge to grab and eat on the go.

Quick Breakfast Tip – No Cooking Needed

If you are an extremely busy person, you may not even have the time to prepare anything for breakfast.  There are still plenty of options for you.  Here are some ideas.

1. Bagel with light cream cheese and orange juice.  This is a quick and healthy way to get carbs protein and good fat for breakfast.  Replace the cream cheese with peanut butter if you want some extra protein.

2. Oatmeal with bananas and milk.  This takes 2 minutes to prepare, will fill you up and has great fiber to help lower cholesterol.  Make sure to skip the sugar!  Instead, try honey or more fruits.  This is a filling breakfast I eat when I need to use a lot of energy throughout the day.

3.  Cheese and fruit.  Some slices of low-fat cheddar and apple slices make a great pairing.  Grab some crackers and nuts for a more filling option.

4. Fruit Smoothie.  One of my favorite breakfast recipes:  1 small yogurt, ¼ cup ice, ¼ cup orange juice, 1 banana, 3 strawberries, 1 peach.  You can add a scoop of protein powder for an extra boost.

5. Cereal Medley.  For a really healthy quick breakfast, mix vanilla yogurt with whole grain cereal.  Pop in a couple pieces of dried fruit and nuts.  You can put it in a sealable container and take it with you to work.

You can make a variety of quick breakfast meals that are filling too.  You can use yogurts, fruits, milk, oatmeal, cereal, breads, cheese, and vegetables.  Get creative and buy fresh produce from the farmer’s market, and you’ll discover some great tasting combinations for a quick breakfast.

Quick Breakfast Tip – a Last Resort

If you are having one of those days where your alarm just didn’t do its job and you’re 10 minutes late to class or work (which I call a Monday), there are still ways to get some nutrients to keep you energized.

If you stop by a gas station or quick mart, they usually sell single bananas for under a dollar.  A banana is a great ‘instant’ breakfast item because it provides energizing carbohydrates for energy.  Pair it with a half-pint of milk from the soda cabinet and you’re onto a filling winner.

I also keep a few peanut butter granola bars on hand in my bag in case I need to rush out of the door.  These are good breakfast snacks because of the longer lasting fats and proteins. They are also a cheaper option than protein bars.

Either way, make sure you eat something for breakfast because it is the most important meal of the day.  Skipping breakfast leaves your body without the necessary energy required for daily activity.  So get prepared, stock up, and enjoy a lifetime of great breakfasts!
