Different Health Benefits of Colored Grapes

In order to stay fit and healthy, the FDA recommends five servings of fruit every single day.  When it comes to grapes, however, there is one lingering question for many people as they fill their shopping carts at their local Farmer’s Market.  Does color matter?  Do red grapes or black grapes offer different nutrients than green grapes?

The surprising answer to this question is yes.  Consider the following colored grapes and their nutritional value:

  • Purple grapes
    Purple (Concord) grapes offer many antioxidants and other nutrients that can help prevent cancer. Quercetin, which is found in purple grapes and purple grape juice, is high in antioxidants and can help fight cancer, arthritis, allergies, stress, and more. Resveratrol, also found in these grapes, helps inhibit breast and prostate cancer. Flavonoids in these grapes also work to help prevent the thickening of arteries that can reduce blood flow to the heart, thus reducing the incidence of heart disease.
  • Green and white grapes
    Of course, it isn’t time to count out green grapes and white grapes just yet.  These options are incredibly rich in vitamins C and K as well as healthy carbohydrates while offering no cholesterol and very little saturated fat, sodium, and calories. These fruits also contain plenty of flavonoid antioxidants as well as iron and potassium, keeping both your immune system and your skin healthy.

Grapes are a fantastic addition to any diet.  Whether enjoyed as part of a delicious fruit salad or as a mid-day snack, adding them to your daily fruit intake can be a great and healthy choice.
