Honey 101: What Do the Different Varieties Taste Like?

Most people know what honey is, but few are aware that there are many different types available from honey farms.  The process that bees go through to make the honey is the same across the whole field of beekeeping, but the plants from which they take the nectar are different, leading to many hundreds of different varieties.  Here, we take a look at the most popular varieties.

Acacia Honey

Acacia honey is a super-sweet variety, made from the nectar of acacia tree blossoms. The honey is clear, and has an almost floral taste.  It also offers many health and nutrition benefits, including liver cleansing and regulating the intestines.  Many use it as a natural alternative to sugar for sweetening tea.

Eucalyptus Plants

Another popular type of honey is made from the nectar of eucalyptus plants.  It isn’t quite as sweet as other varieties of honey, and some say that it has a mild menthol taste.  Some people believe that it can help with colds and headaches.

Clover Honey

Honey made from clover fields is also very popular, and it is mildly sweet.  It has an amber color, and generally comes from Canada.  New Zealand also makes and exports this sweet, healthy treat.

Blueberry Honey

Blueberry honey, from the blueberry plant, is an interesting choice.  It has a light amber color and a taste that offers a mildly acidic tang.  It is different from most other types of honey.  This type of honey is made mostly in the United States.

Orange Blossom Honey

Orange blossom honey includes citrus and is mild in flavor, with a refreshing light scent and color.  This type is made in Southern California, Texas and Florida.

Sage Honey

This mild honey may take a very long time to granulate, but is made in California and is great for those looking to put something different in their tea or on their sandwiches.

If you love honey and want to try some new and flavorful varieties, you have plenty from which you can choose.  It is a great way to add some sweetness to your beverages and desserts, without sticking to the traditional kind your mother gave you as a child.
