How to Eat Healthily When Delayed at the Airport

Traveling by air certainly offers some great benefits.  Imagine having no other option but driving from coast to coast!  However, there is one area in which flying doesn’t really help you – nutrition.  Airport food options have not been traditionally known for their health benefits.  With that being said, there are things that you can do to eat healthy food while at the airport.

Modern airports have a variety of dining options, from sit down restaurants to fast food joints.  It’s best to eschew those fast food options, though.  If you do choose such a restaurant, opt for a salad or something light.  Remember that a meal will be provided on the plane if you are flying longer distance.

However, there are many airports where the food options are more limited.  Bagels and bread items are usually the extent of your options, with a selection of candy and sugary treats thrown in.  Avoid the candy and sweets – opt for a plain wholewheat bagel or something similar.  These options are already high in calories, so avoid adding toppings like cream cheese.

The best option is to always bring a packed lunch when you are flying.  Modern security measures will not allow you to bring your own fluids or drinks past check-in, but you should always think ahead and pack a healthy, wholesome sandwich along with a piece of fruit for each family member who will be traveling.  A Ziplock bag with a handful of your favorite nuts or fresh grapes will provide a tasty yet light desert.

If you don’t need your packed meal before you get on board, you can always eat it on the plane to replace the typically high-sodium, microwaved (AKA soggy) meals that most airlines typically serve you.

Finally, you should watch your beverage choices while dining at an airport on on board the plane.  Avoid things like high calorie coffee drinks and sugary sodas.  Instead, opt for water, milk, or plain coffee.
