How to Make 5 Manly Drinks For Dad on Father’s Day

With Father’s Day right around the corner, here are five of the manliest drinks out there for dear old dad this Father’s Day.  Hit up the local liquor store and to find the best ingredients, and enjoy your afternoon taste-testing!

1. The Whiskey Sour

This drink is to your dad what Marilyn Monroe was to his puberty.  As American as baseball and apple pie, the Whiskey Sour is as patriotic as they come.  These drinks have been doctored up over the past few decades with fruit juices and cherry garnishes, but at the end of the day, to make a good one only three ingredients are needed: whiskey, sour mix and ice.  We’re not looking to impress people with an over the top drink recipe here.  We’re looking to make a good drink that dad will love. Pour equal parts whiskey and sour mix over rocks, give it a quick stir and hand your dad the glass.  Easy.  Manly.  Done.

2. The Manhattan

Now most modern recipes call for this classic to be served in a martini glass and specific measurements, but we’re not serving New York Debutants here, we’re serving your old man.  To start, grab a rocks glass and toss in some ice.  Now my pops prefers Johnny Walker Red, but any decent scotch will do here.  Most recipes call for an ounce of scotch and a half ounce of sweet vermouth.  You can go this route or if your dad prefers a stiffer drink after a long day, double it and call it good.

3. The Salty Dog

Say your dad has a hankering for fruit juice infused drinks.  There is none better than a Salty Dog.  Take a standard pint glass and salt the rim.  Throw three ounces of gin, a half a teaspoon of salt and 10 ounces of grapefruit juice into a shaker.  Give the shaker a once over and pour it into the pint glass.  No real garnish is needed here, but if you’re feeling fancy, toss a lemon wedge on the side of the glass and wish dad a Very (Very!) Happy Father’s Day.

4. The Rusty Nail

Here is a classic from way back and one your dad’s dad most likely enjoyed.  Get yourself an old-fashioned glass tumbler (an actual “old-fashioned” glass and not one that just looks old-fashioned) and fill it with ice cubes.  Pour in an ounce and a half of good scotch, a half ounce of Drambuie, and one twist of a lemon peel.  Give this bad boy a good stir, and present it to dad.  Don’t worry, he’ll thank you later – probably at high volume from the general floor area.  But he’ll be happy, which is the main thing you’re aiming for here.

5. Bourbon Straight

This one can’t get any easier or any manlier.  Go pick up a bottle of Jim Beam’s Small Batch Baker’s Bourbon.  This will run you about $50 per bottle, but comes across at about 108 proof.  It should last your old man a while, so when it comes to booze, this is what we like to call a good investment.  Grab a rocks glass and place your finger on the outside of the glass where the bottom of the glass starts on the inside.  Poor the Baker’s until it reaches where the top of where your finger is (don’t forget to wash your hands first).  Hand this to your dad and allow him the peace and quiet this classic bourbon deserves.

All in all, these are five classic manly drinks that will make this Father’s Day one of the best ones ever.  If he wants to try a few more, opt for your local bar, and make him pay.  Enjoy!
