How to Make Country Style Fruit Crumble

If you have your own home garden or you just really love baked fruit, this recipe is for you.  This dish is traditionally made around harvest time (autumn), and provides a sticky, delicious treat for kiddies and adults alike.  They’ll want you to bake this dessert every week!

You will need:

Glass or china baking dish (flat and rectangular)

Mixing bowl

Any available fruit (apple and pear is traditional, but you can also try gooseberry, rhubarb etc.)

Sultanas or raisins

1 cup white sugar

2 cups white plain flour

Half a pound (lb.) butter

1 drop vanilla essence

Steps:

First, roll up your sleeves and wash your hands – you’re going to get messy!  Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees.

In your mixing bowl, add the flour, butter and sugar.  You can mix everything together with your fingers.

Rub everything together until the resultant mixture looks like breadcrumbs and is completely dry, with no lumps of butter left.  Add in a drop of vanilla essence for flavor.

Now chop up your fruit.  Slice the apples and pears, and arrange in the baking dish in a thick layer.  Sprinkle lightly with sugar.

Next, spread your breadcrumb mixture on top of the fruit.  Even it our with your fingers, being sure to fill any gaps until all the fruit is covered.  Sprinkle top with sugar.

Put the fruit crumble in the oven for 30 minutes at 180 degrees.  Remove and enjoy cold.

Serving Suggestion:

For best results, chill in the refrigerator for an hour before serving and serve with whipped cream.  Alternatively, serve warm with a splash of heated yellow cream custard.
