How to Make Shamrock Cookies for St.Patrick’s Day

When St. Patrick’s Day arrives, you might want to have some goodies to bring in and share at the office or to make for your family.  Everyone loves a cookie, and a shamrock shaped treat is perfect for the holiday!  It’s time to throw out store-bought cookies from the supermarket and make homemade ones to enjoy with your kids.

Ingredients:

5 cups of flour

½ teaspoon of salt

1 teaspoon of vanilla

3 eggs, ¼ cup of milk

2 cups of sugar

½ cup of butter

½ cup of shortening

1 can of white frosting

Green food coloring

Shamrock shaped cookie cutter

Steps:

Cream the sugar and the shortening, and then beat in the 3 eggs.  Stir in the salt, the vanilla and the milk, and slowly add the flour.  Mix the dough with your hands to make sure that all of the ingredients are blended properly, and then roll the dough until it is almost flat.

Pop it in the Oven!

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.  Use your cookie cutter to cut out the shamrock shapes from the dough.  You should get about 2 dozen cookies.  Place each cookie onto an ungreased cookie sheet and bake them for about 12 minutes.  Let all of the cookies cool.

Decorate Your Cookie

While they are cooling, take the frosting and mix in 8 to 10 drops of green food coloring. Once the cookies are cool, frost them with your green icing.  Add sprinkles, shamrock designs and even “Good Luck!” sayings with icing!  Get creative and make each cookie look original and personalized.

To enjoy an afternoon’s baking with your kids, play Irish music and wear green to avoid getting pinched!
