Is Raw or Refined Sugar Healthier?

Health consciousness is not just for hippies and environmentalists anymore.  The green movement is everywhere, and people are looking for better ways to eat healthier without giving up the foods that they love.

One thing that is cropping up in restaurants and health food stores everywhere lately is raw sugar.  However, the question many have is whether this is really any better or healthier than eating the standard, white, refined sugar that we are all accustomed to.

Chemical Free

In short, unrefined sugar is absolutely a healthier option than plain white sugar.  It has minerals and nutrients that are not included in refined and powdered sugar, such as phosphorus, iron, magnesium and calcium.  Raw sugar as a whole is certainly a healthier option for people who are looking to achieve better health, and it does not contain the same chemicals as the refined version of the product.

Sweet Truth

However, although raw sugar is healthier, don’t take this as a free pass to eat as much of it as you want.  Both raw and refined sugar can still contribute to diabetes, dental cavities and weight issues.  The difference is simply that the raw version contains no chemicals and still retains all of the nutrients found in the sugarcane plant, making it slightly better for you – but not much.

When eaten in moderation, raw sugar can be both delicious and beneficial, and many of our favorite foods would not be the same without it.  If you want to find a healthier way to enjoy your favorite baked goods, consider making them with raw sugar rather than the refined version, as a small step toward a healthier lifestyle.
