Money Saving Cooking Tips for Singles

Nearly 10 percent of the U.S. population lives alone.  With all of the single people in the country, you would think that people would know how to go about cooking for one.  However, many singles waste money on takeout food on an almost nightly basis, or they exsist on microwave dinners and cereal.

Cooking doesn’t have to be difficult, and it isn’t as hard as you might think to pare down the meals to suit your single life.  It just takes a little preparation.

One of the keys to cooking for one is to make sure that you use the right amount of food, and no more.  When you look at recipes online or in cookbooks, you will find that most of them are for serving two to four people.  You can simply halve or quarter the ingredients to suit your appetite.

Of course, you might find that you want to start cooking larger meals, even though you are only eating for one.  You can use the leftovers for your lunch or dinner over the next few days instead of cooking again.  It all saves time and of course electricity!

You still want to eat healthy when you are cooking for one.  Buying fresh vegetables and fruits at the supermarket is a good idea, but you need to make sure that you do not overbuy.  You do not want them to spoil before you have a chance to eat them.  This might mean extra trips to the grocery store, but you will find that this can still save money since you won’t be throwing out spoiled food.

Cooking for one doesn’t have to be boring, and it certainly doesn’t have to be unhealthy.  Think about the foods you buy as well as the amount you are buying, and you will find that it is easy to adapt to purchasing and making smaller portions.
