Need a Healthy Recipe for a Nutritious Kids Snack? Try our Homemade Trail Mix a Family Favorite

If you have children, it’s important to have a healthy recipe on hand for a nutritious kids snack for whenever those hunger pangs strike.  Whatever is easily accessible is going to be eaten, so tilt the scales in the direction of your kids good health by keeping a healthy recipe kids snack readily available.

You can make your own healthy trail mix cheaply at home, using your children’s favorite nuts and dried fruit.  And you can adapt this healthy recipe to your kids tastes.

A variety of ingredients should be included in your healthy trail mix, for example:

– Dried Fruits: dried fruits, like fresh fruits, contain essential nutrients.  Try unsweetened dried fruits such as: pineapple, raisins, apricots, cranberries, coconut flakes, dried banana slices.

– Nuts are essential to our healthy recipe, because they contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, as well as fiber, antioxidants and protein.  Use unsalted and raw nuts for maximum nutrition, skip the salt as too much salt is bad for your children’s health.  Nuts to consider for our trail mix include: pecans, pistachios, walnuts, almonds, macadamia nuts, sunflower seeds, cashews, peanuts.

– You can add a touch of sweetness to this healthy recipe with a scattering of dark chocolate chips, which are good for antioxidants.

To mix, take 1 cup each of two different kinds of nuts, two different kinds of dried fruits, and a quarter cup of chocolate chips. If you only have one kind of nut, add two cups of that kind to keep this healthy recipe balanced.  Experiment and keep the kids guessing.  They’ll love it. Store unused trail mix in an airtight jar or cookie tin, do not let this mix sit out in the open air for too long or it will quickly go stale.

For an extra time-saver, divide the mix between seven small zip-lock bags and put one in your child’s packed lunch every day. Trail mix makes for a tasty and satisfying snack at school as well as at home, and the healthy fats in the nuts will make them feel full and (hopefully) make them skip the candy machine at lunch!
