Why You Should Avoid Eating Tilapia Fish

Everyone will tell you that eating fish is good for you and that you should eat fish and chicken, but avoid red meats.  However, you have to be careful with the type of fish that you choose to put on your plate, too.  For example, people no longer recommend that you should eat tilapia.

Researchers have discovered that tilapia has low levels of omega-3 fatty acids, but very high amounts of omega-6 fatty acids.  Since we have so many other sources of omega-6 fatty acids, people who also eat tilapia have more of the fats than they need.  This can cause a number of problems including blood clotting, inflammation and cell proliferation.

The fatty acids in tilapia can create risk to those who have problems with inflammation, such as those suffering from heart disease, asthma and arthritis.

While eating tilapia might not actually be dangerous, it doesn’t have enough health benefits to outweigh the health problems it can cause.  That doesn’t mean that you have to give up on eating fish though, it just means that you need to choose the right type of fish.

When you add fish to your diet, you will want to choose fish that has high levels of omega-3 fatty acids.  Some of the best fist to choose is salmon, wild salmon in particular.  Black cod, herring and sardines are also good choices.  A visit to your local butcher or fish market will give you a great selection.

As long as you stay away from tilapia, you should be able to find some great tasting fish that can give you incredible health benefits!
