5 Fun, Low Cost Family Activities For the 4th of July

Summertime is in full swing, and the 4th of July approaches quicker than you thought. But never fear, here are five simple, low-cost ideas for family fun on the 4th:

Barbecue: Many people immediately think of a barbecue when they think of the 4th of July, with good reason. Grilled meats, with sides of corn on the cob, watermelon, chips, and some ice cream to top it all off are traditional summer favorites, especially when shared with friends or extended family. Visit a party supplies store to pick up some decorations for your backyard, and you’re set.

Water Fun: If you are lucky enough to be near a lake, the 4th of July offers a wonderful opportunity to swim or fish. Otherwise, consider attending or hosting a pool party. No pool? No problem! Sprinklers, water-pistols, super-soakers and water balloons are portable and apt to induce giggles to everyone’s satisfaction.

Local Town Events: Check your local newspaper or notice boards for information on local events happening in your area. You may be surprised at what you find. Some places host an annual carnival with games and rides for all ages, while others may have a parade or a “fun run” for those more athletic. For many years, my children enjoyed concocting entries in our local rural area parade, sometimes as simple as dressing up a wagon and wearing patriotic-themed clothing, where they frequently won prizes for their efforts.

Fireworks: Many cities host fantastic fireworks displays on the 4th of July, sometimes coordinated with music broadcast by the local radio station. But if you live too far away from one of these professionally-produced shows, you may consider producing your own, more modest affair.

Host Your Own Firework Display (Safely!): Be sure to check the laws in your area regarding fireworks, including confirming with the Forest Service that burning is permitted at that time. If fireworks are not allowed, don’t shoot them. And always, always think safety first. According to the American Pyrotechnics Association, an estimated 9,800 fireworks-related injuries occurred in 2010, which is too many when safety precautions are available. If you are uncertain how to best manage firework safety, The National Council on Fireworks Safety has an informative safety video on their website, as well as tips and reminders to prevent injury or incident.

Be Creative and Educational: The Internet abounds with Independence Day-themed craft ideas to delight children. Grab some construction paper and make a paper chain of red, white and blue links. Working with the kids on holiday-themed crafts is a great opportunity to talk about what the holiday means to us as a nation, and more especially to you. Or expand your culinary horizons with some authentic recipes from Revolutionary years. A quick on-line search for “colonial recipes” produces several websites with tantalizing ideas. You’ll be learning history and having fun at the same time!

Whether you choose to spend this 4th of July with others or just enjoy the time with your family, celebrate the freedom we all enjoy, and make this 4th of July an occasion to remember.
