Catching Big Bass: Beginner Fishing Tips

Fishing for bass is one of the most challenging and rewarding of angling adventures.  Bass are renowned for putting up a good fight and for even leaping out of the water sometimes, resulting in a striking display.  Fishing for this quarry requires that you understand both how they move under the waves, and what attracts them.  It also requires that you have the right equipment.

If you’re a beginner, look for a closed face fishing reel.  You’ll also want a medium action fishing pole – a five footer usually provides excellent performance for a beginner.  This ensures that you spend your time fishing and not trying to learn how to use more advanced equipment.

The next thing you have to do is to understand what bass are looking for.  Fishing for bass means hooking an aggressive, predatory fish.  They like to lurk, and that means that any place they can set up a good ambush is where you’re likely to find them.  Pools and deep streams containing lily pads are some of the best places to go bass fishing.  Drag a lure such as a plastic frog over the lily pads.  Sometimes, you’ll end up with a hungry bass coming right out of the water to grab it when the lure falls off the pad.

Fishing bass is also usually more productive in areas where there are fallen logs under the water, where there are underwater drop-offs, and near docks.  Remember that these areas are also dangerous for snags, too, so you’ll need to master the techniques of good angling to avoid frustration and broken lines.
