Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday celebrated all across the nation.  However, there are many interesting fun facts and bits of trivia about Thanksgiving that you might not know.  Learning these facts will help you better appreciate this holiday.

 

For instance, did you know that two hundred and eighty million turkeys are sold for Thanksgiving at supermarkets across the nation?  That’s a lot of birds!

 

Another fun fact is that Americans eat an average of about sixteen pounds of turkey every year, most of it between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

 

Thanksgiving, while supposedly an American holiday, is also celebrated in Canada, during the month of October.

 

The Friday after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday and is the beginning of the shopping season for Christmas in America.

 

Benjamin Franklin, one of the most respected men in American history, actually wanted to change the nation’s bird from the eagle to the turkey because the turkey had “better character” and “courage.”

 

The average weight of a Thanksgiving turkey is a whopping fifteen pounds.

 

Turkey has a higher amount of protein than chicken, and even higher than beef.

 

The turkey has lived in North America for about ten million years.

Wild turkeys can fly over fifty-five miles per hour for short distances, but domesticated turkeys cannot fly due to their artificially increased body weight and shorter wings.

 

The world’s largest pumpkin pie weighed over two thousand pounds!

 

Pumpkin sales were worth more than one hundred and forty-one million dollars in two thousand and eight.
