Has Twitter Altered How We See Our Favorite Celebrities?

Twitter has had a powerful effect on the way that people communicate.  This social network has grown rapidly, and is now the second most popular social network in the world, right behind Facebook.  In addition to changing how people interact with each other, it might also have changed how we view celebrities.

Once, celebrities were people to be admired from a distance.  You learned more about what a celebrity thought or did by reading about it in the newspaper, in tabloids or through Internet new sources.  However, with Twitter, you are able to get information from your favorite celebrity firsthand.  By sending out tweets, a celebrity can inform, amuse or interact with fans and followers on Twitter.

There are many examples of how stars have used this.  For instance, Nathan Fillion (star of the ill-fated Firefly, as well as the popular show Castle) uses Twitter to interact with fans from all over the world.  Another celebrity that has used Twitter quite well is Lady Gaga, and even Neil Gaiman (vaunted author) has used Twitter to connect with his fan base to a considerable extent.

The immediate way this has changed how we view our favorite celebrity is to make them more personable.  It allows celebrities to be real people – with humor, with drama in their lives and more.  Twitter might just be the force that allows us to finally take our favorite celebrity off of his or her pedestal and realize that they are real people, just like us.
