How to Choose Basic Art Supplies for Your Child

Studies have shown that allowing your child to express their artistic side will have a positive effect on them throughout their life.  Encouragement to be artistic at an early age will greatly influence their ability to think creatively, and can help them in school, and later, in their career.

In order to help your child develop their artistic side, you will want to make sure to give them access to plenty of art supplies as they are growing up.  If you have visited an art supply or craft store, then you know there are an almost overwhelming variety of different art disciplines from which to choose.  However, there are basics you should buy for your child that will allow them to express plenty of  creativity, no matter which artistic field they choose to explore.

Crayons are a basic, yet essential purchase, especially for a small child, because they provide a myriad of colors in an easy to use (and clean up!) form.  If you’d like to buy something similar for an older child, then consider coloring pencils or chalks.  Markers are messier and dry out much easier when children forget to put the caps back on.

Sketching paper is a must. Be sure to choose drawing paper instead of construction paper because it will hold up better.  If they are younger and learning how to use crayons, buy a handful of coloring books so they can learn how to work within lines and shapes.  Also, they can use kid-friendly scissors if they’re old enough to cut out their drawings.

Watercolor paints are a good way to let your child get into the world of painting because they are easy to use and washable, should they get on your child’s clothing.  Of course, they will also need a basic set of paint brushes.  As your child ages, move on to thicker paints and better brushes.

Although many art supply stores carry these items, they’re easily found at dollar stores, or convenience stores for much cheaper prices.
