How to Create a Gift Basket for Your Mother on Mother’s Day

A Mother’s Day gift basket is a great way to customize a gift for your mom.  You can create a basket that not only suits your budget, but that contains items that you know your mother will appreciate.  It will cost you less than you think!

Your first step in creating a Mother’s Day gift basket will be to find a container.  If you are planning to put larger items in the gift basket, consider a large wicker basket.  For smaller items, you might use a pottery piece.  If you made it yourself you get extra brownie points!  This time of year, large chain stores such as Target and Walmart are selling off their leftover Easter Baskets at half price, so make sure to make a stop there and you can pick up a straw or wicker basket for pennies.

Picking a theme for the gift basket is a great way to create a Mother’s Day gift that best suits the interests of your mother.  For instance, if your mom enjoys gardening, purchase a garden pot and fill it with gardening supplies.  If she prefers reading, purchase a book or two by her favorite author, put it in a small picnic hamper lined with soft material, and then surround these items with tea or coffee shop samples.  Whatever theme you choose, surrounding a few higher priced items with smaller gifts, such as homemade cookies, bubble bath and soaps, can be a great way to fill in the basket.

Before adding items to the gift basket, you can add liner or filler to the basket.  This can include colorful paper or cloth. Or you could make the filler itself a gift, in the form of a scarf, bag or other wearable garment.  Wrap the basket with clear cellophane or gift wrap.  You can accent it with a pretty bow or ribbon.

Add a card in which you’ve written a tribute to your mom.  This can include a hand written poem, sentiment, photograph, or a memory that you’ve shared with her.
