How to Customize Your Children’s Clothing

When you have a young child who loves to dress up, it’s fun to dress them in one-of-a-kind outfits and attire.  There are plenty of ways to make boring, chain-store clothing look hand-made and customized, without using a sewing machine or learning how to knit.  Even if you think you simply don’t have the time or lack the skills needed, you can still customize your child’s clothing with very little fuss or trouble.

Use Transfers

The easiest way is to use iron-on transfers.  These can be found at any arts and crafts store, even at your local mega-mart department store.  Iron-on designs are simple and fast, and all you need is the clothing, the transfer and an iron.  You’ll have custom, one of a kind kiddie clothes in no time!

Paint it Up

One of the best ways to make unique clothes for your little one is to use fabric paint.  All you need to do is buy a few plain shirts, T-shirts or tank tops and then purchase fabric paints that will show up on the color that you choose.  White is the easiest here, but you can use almost any color you want, as long as your paint will show up against it.

Use a stencil and your fabric paint to create clever sayings, cute designs or pictures on your child’s clothes.  They will probably beg you to let this help out with this step!  You can also use glitter to add some sparkle to the clothes, or you can use metallic paint if you prefer.

Sew Patterns

If you have any skill with needle and thread, you can make your own embellishments for those custom clothes, too.  Adding flowers, edging, wording and borders is all very simple for beautiful clothes that your child will be proud to wear!
