How to Deal with a Flirty Boss

No one wants to feel as though their boss is flirting with them in work, or making unwanted advancements.  It’s an uncomfortable feeling and it is entirely unprofessional.  It can make your work suffer and can even cause depression, or fill you with a daily desire to call in sick.

However, before you make accusations or try to address the issue, you need to ensure that you are reading the situation correctly.  You do not want to make an accusation that is unfounded, as it will have consequences for both you and your boss if there was a misunderstanding.  However, you also do not want to ignore it if it is a real problem as the situation may get worse, or lead to unwanted gossip that could get you fired!

When you are certain that your boss is hitting on you, it is important that you let him or her know that you aren’t interested and that their behavior is unprofessional.  In many cases, this will stop the flirtatious advancement, and you can continue with your work.  You might have a boss that doesn’t want to take no for an answer though, and will continue to flirt or make unwelcome comments.

You should never comply to his or her advances for fear of losing your job, and you never want to be in a situation where you feel powerless against your boss.  Talk to his or her supervisor, or visit the human resources department and file a complaint.  If your company is too small to have an HR dept, you can contact an attorney or lawyer to handle the matter quietly and confidentially for you.

Simply ignoring the problem is not always the best idea if it’s making your work environment uncomfortable.  There are plenty of sexual harassment laws in place to ensure you have an ethical and suitable workplace.
