Choosing a Great First Pet for Your Children

Children and pets naturally go together.  Kids love to have a companion, and animals make excellent ways to teach valuable lessons about responsibility.  If you are looking for a great first pet for your children, here are a few good ideas.

While small pets such as fish and hamsters might seem like a great idea for a child’s first pet, you may want to reconsider.  These animals are very fragile and can be easily harmed or killed by the innocent intentions of children.  Animals like hamsters can also become easily scared and may scratch or bite your kids.  These animals also don’t bond with children the way that dogs and cats do.

Cats and dogs really can make great first pets for households large enough to house them properly.  These animals are exceptionally nurturing and can become fast friends with your kids.  A dog such as a Labrador retriever can make an excellent pet, as they are friendly and loving and are also notoriously gentle in terms of temperament.  A cat can also make a great pet, and can be small enough to fit in well even in a small apartment.

Finding the right first pet for your children takes a great deal of consideration.  Not only must you consider the size and temperament of the pet, but the cost of raising it.  Dogs and cats require multiple vet visits per year and may be quite expensive.  You should never adopt a pet you cannot afford and provide time and care for.

With these tips in mind, choosing the right animal for your children can be a wonderful experience.
