How to Choose the Right Crate For Your Dog

Although dog owners have differing opinions on the use of crates for their pet, many believe it’s the best way to keep their dog safe.  Protecting the dog when being transported in the car can prevent many, sometimes tragic, accidents.  Many small-dog owners also like to ‘crate’ their dog at night to prevent destruction of property, or when left alone in the house for short periods of time.

You can get a dog crate from any pet store, or online from used sources such as Craigslist and eBay.  The important thing to remember when shopping for a crate for your dog is to find one that is the appropriate size and construction for your dog.  Different dog breeds will require various sizes and styles of crates, so it’s best to do a little research before making a purchase.

The main thing to consider is the size of crate you’ll need.  Keeping your dog safe also involves making sure he’s comfortable.  When in the crate, your dog should be able to stand up, sit down, and turn around without having to crouch or duck – an act that both stresses him out and may cause joint problems in the long run.  The general rule of thumb is that the crate should be a MINIMUM of one and a half times the height and length of your dog.  It should also be wide enough to let him to lie down comfortably and stretch out, or your dog may not be able to sleep properly at night.

The next thing to consider is the material the crate is made of.  If it will be used inside the home, it’s best to use a metal crate to allow better ventilation and air flow for your pet.  Crates used in the car or during travel should be constructed of hard plastic for durability and safety during a crash.  Keeping your dog safe is important, and you must consider many factors in order to keep them safe and happy in crates.  Crates generally come in sizes from extra small to XXX large, and should accommodate just about any breed.
