How to Install a Gutter on Your Flat Roof

Are you looking to install a gutter on your flat roof to help improve drainage during storms and showers?  If so, you may want to consider doing the job yourself.  Gutter installation isn’t as difficult as it seems, and doing it yourself rather than hiring a roofing contractor can help you save money.

It is important to keep in mind that your gutter pieces need to slope down about ½ an inch for every ten feet of space.  If the gutter is more than around forty feet, you need to slope downward from the middle so that each side moves towards a corner downspout.

To get started, you will want to snap all of your layout lines using a chalk line.  This will help you line up the gutter pieces so that they are properly sloped.  Then install the fascia brackets.

Next, you will want to saw the gutters so that they are the correct length for your home.  Attach the end caps and cut the necessary holes for your downspouts.  Once everything has been cut and prepared, you are ready to install the cutters onto the brackets.

When you reach a corner, you will want to ensure that you form the joints properly.  Use stripping to ensure that the gutter pieces hold a firm bond and don’t leak.  When this is complete, all that you need to do is connect the downspout to your gutter.

When completed, your home will have much better drainage, and you can rest easy that you didn’t have to spend a fortune to get the job done.
