How to Repaint Your Home’s Interior

Tackling home improvement projects on your own can be a cost effective way of making your home more appealing.  Whether you just want to redecorate or you’re working with a realtor to sell, a quick coat of paint can make the interior of your home look like new.  Paint is an easy and inexpensive decorating tool that can make a dramatic difference in your home, no matter what your budget.

Choose the Right Paint

Before you get started, you’ll want to know if your existing paint is oil-based or latex.  Oil-based is usually shinier, whereas latex paint gives a matt finish.  Once you’ve figured that out, you’ll know where to begin before applying a new coat of paint.  Walls painted with oil-based paint will need to be primed before you can repaint them.  Primer will allow the new paint to adhere to the walls more easily.

Pick a Color

If you’re unsure of the colors you should use, talk to a specialist at your local paint store and bring in photos of the other colors in your home.  The store’s experts will show you how to complement those colors with a great shade, and even suggest different colors that are currently popular and may work well with what you’ve got.

Buy the Right Tools

In order to paint your home, you’ll need something more than just a can of paint and a paint brush.  Many supplies are needed, including painter’s tape, paint rollers, drop cloths, primer and ladders.  These can be bought cheaply at any home improvement store.

Cover Everything with Drop Cloths

Once you’re ready to begin, you’ll need to cover furniture and flooring with drop cloths to make sure paint doesn’t get on anything.  Use sandpaper to sand areas of the wall with flaking paint, and fill any holes with drywall putty.  Remove any excess dust from the walls before you begin painting with a vacuum cleaner or dry sweeping brush.

Painting Technique

When applying paint, you’ll want to start with the ceiling in each room.  Use a roller to apply paint to the ceiling and a small brush to apply the paint around the edges.  Use the same technique for the walls, using a brush to make sure the edges are tidy. .

Allow to dry overnight before applying a second coat, until you have the coverage and depth of color that you require.
