How to Train Your Kitten to Use the Litter Box

Training your kitten to use a litter box is much easier than you might think.  Cats are very intelligent animals, and even the little ball of fluff that’s sitting in your lap has instincts that make her quite easy to litter train.

When you are attempting to litter train your kitten, you will want to make sure that you have an appropriate sized litter box.  If the box is too large, she will not feel comfortable.  A simple, cheap pan is fine when she is a kitten and training.  Find a good location for the pan that offers easy access for your kitten.

Because cats bury their waste, you might want to think about removing those potted plants that you have, at least until your kitten is old enough to know that they aren’t just a fancy litter box with strange décor!

Once you have your litter box where you want it, place your kitten inside.  She will probably be curious and sniff around.  Do not be surprised if she starts digging right away.  This might be all the training that your kitten needs.  Once she sees that she can dig, instinct will take over.  If it takes a bit longer with your kitten, don’t worry!

Simply put her in the box until she starts to understand.  This can take several days, or even weeks in some cases.  Don’t give up and always remain patient.

Watch your kitten, and if you see signs that she might be getting ready to go outside of the box, coax her toward it.  Clean the litter box daily and make sure that it is always as clean as possible.  Cats do not like a mess any more than you do.
