Install Your New Front Door Yourself With These Simple, Easy Tips

Installing a front door is a fairly advanced do-it-yourself project, but if done correctly, it can save you a lot of time and expense.

First, remove the existing door, then remove the trim around the interior and exterior of the door. The nails holding the door and frame in place can be cut with a reciprocating saw. Be sure to have someone help you remove the door; they can be very heavy and may cause injury if you try to lift one yourself.

The door frame may have to be adjusted to accommodate the dimensions of the new front door. If the door frame is too large, you can use plywood to reduce the size. The new front door needs to have sealant at its base, so apply this to the door frame before sliding the new frame in. Once your frame is of the right size, slide the new front door into place. You can tack it in place with a couple of nails so it’s stable while you adjust it.

To make sure it’s square, measure the front door diagonally in both directions, starting at the top corners. The measurement should be the same distance in both cases. If it’s not, you have to square the front door a bit. A level can help you make sure that the door is installed correctly before you nail it into place. Once it’s in place, simply replace the trim to finish the job.
