Putting Up Sheetrock for Your Addition is Easy When You Know How

Hanging Sheetrock is a job that is easy to do without calling in a professional. However, be aware that you will need at least two people working on it, as Sheetrock is heavy!

The first thing that you need to do is determine how much Sheetrock you need. You can do this by measuring the area in which you are going to hand the Sheetrock, and then order all of your supplies, including the nails, Sheetrock tape, and mudding.

It’s a good idea to wear safety goggles, masks, and gloves when working with the drywall. Sheetrock chips and flakes easily, and the last thing you want as a piece of rock hitting you in the eye. When you have all of your supplies, your Sheetrock is cut into the proper size, and the inspector tells you everything is in order, you can begin hanging it.

You should start with the ceiling. Use a drywall lift to hold the Sheetrock in place while you nail it to the ceiling. When you are hammering the nails into the drywall, make sure that you strike one extra time after the nail is in to create a slight dimple. If you are using screws, do the same thing. The nails or screws should be placed about eight to twelve inches apart to evenly distribute the weight. On all of the outside edges of the Sheetrock, you will want to install a corner bead.

Finish putting up the rest of the drywall around the room in the same manner that you did the ceiling. After the Sheetrock is up, apply the mudding on the seams and joints with a taping knife. While the mudding is still wet, apply the fiberglass tape. Apply the mud to those dimples you made in the drywall earlier. Let everything dry, and then you are done.
