What Can You do to Calm Down a Stressed Cat?

Animals, just like people, can suffer from stress.  This can be caused by a number of different factors, and can show up in your cat in some strange ways.

For instance, if your cat has a lot of stress, it might stop using the litter box completely.  It might suddenly start clawing or chewing objects that it never touched previously.  What can you do to calm down a stressed out cat without consulting your vet?

One of the most common things that will cause your cat stress is a change in routine.  Cats are creatures of habit and they like it when things remain consistent.  Even something as simple as you getting up earlier in the morning can put stress on your cat.  Try to keep the cat’s environment as consistent as possible.

You might also consider giving your cat some alone time.  That is, a few hours in a bedroom alone, without any outside stressors, can often help calm down your pet and give it some time to get away from whatever is bothering it.

If you have tried everything to no avail, it might be time to bring in the experts.  Medication prescribed by your vet can help your cat remain calm and happy.  However, medicating your cat should only be done as a last resort.  You need to find natural ways to combat stress in your pet’s life, rather than going the route of medication, unless that is the only thing left to try.  Often, a vet will not prescribe medication unless you have exhausted all other routes.
