5 Cost Free Gifts to Give Your Dad on Father’s Day

It’s almost Father’s Day, and you’re all out of cash.  What to do now?  With a little ingenuity, and some scavenging around the house, you can come up with a great present that will blow Dad away.  Here are five wonderful ideas that say “I love you” and will not cost a thing.  These will surely become priceless memories for the family.

Breakfast in Bed

Serve Dad his favorite omelet, pancake, or even just cereal.  Decorate the tray with the best silverware, and add a personal touch with fresh flowers gathered from your own garden or the park, and a homemade greeting card.  That will really get Dad pepped up for his special day and make it a memorable one.

Daddy’s Brag Book

This may take some time to make, but it’s worth it to get a smile (and a few tears) from Dad.  You can allocate sections for each member of the family to fill in with photos, mementos and messages.  Poems, short stories and family jokes will surely delight him.  You can also write up your Dad’s biography and highlight his best moments, starting from his early childhood to the present.  Mom and Grandma can help provide valuable input for this part.  Visit a craft store and buy some colored paper or fabric scraps to trim the pages to make the book a work of family art.

Collage or Poster

Did you know that the first Father’s Day present was made about 4,000 years ago? A young Babylonian named Elmesu carved out a message on a clay tablet to wish his dad a long and healthy life.  Nowadays, you need only a large blank piece of paper, crayons, markers, pictures… and of course your creativity.  Cut out magazine pictures or photos of Dad’s favorite things – beer, football, anything else.  Don’t forget to include Dad’s photo and your greeting.

Coupon Booklet or Box

Here is something to which every member of the family can contribute.  Prepare coupons that will entitle Dad to family privileges, like the accomplishment of chores.  You can make a whole booklet full of coupons that Dad can use throughout the year.  One example is: “One free car wash courtesy of Jr.”  Another could be: “Free hug from the youngest member of the family.”  Some coupons can even be rain checks.  For instance: “Free trash take-out service for one week from Josh.”  For more fun, place the coupons in a box and ask Dad to draw one out every morning and announce it to the family.  Whoever is named in the coupon will execute the favor for Dad.

Free Events in Town

Many US cities organize free family concerts or other events exclusively for Father’s Day. For instance, there will be a free spa deals for dads at the Victor Hanson Recreation Center in Queens, New York.  If you live in the Los Angeles area, you can take him to the comic book expo at the Civic Center.  Just check out the calendars of the cities on the Web to get more details.
