Do Collector’s Dolls Make Good Gifts For Children?

Are you looking for a great gift idea for your children this year?  If so, then collector’s dolls or collectible action figures might be one of the items that you are considering.  Are these a good gift idea for kids, though?  What are the pros and cons of giving this type of gift?

First, collector’s dolls can be great gift ideas for both boys and girls.  You will find classic Barbie dolls, as well as other collectible figures from the films and TV shows of your youth (think Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, etc).  This diversity means that you can likely find a gift that will appeal to almost any kid, and at any age.  You may also want your children to grow up playing with the same toys that you did, such as Transformers, Zoids, or He-Man figures.

However, there is a small problem here.  Because of their age and the fact that they are collectors items, these dolls will probably be very expensive.  And the child will probably not understand that such dolls are meant to be looked at and collected rather than actually played with.  While that might not seem problematic, once the package is opened, the value of that collector’s doll is reduced immediately.  In fact, if the doll has been played with, there might be no collector’s value left in it at all.

Therefore, consider collector’s dolls as good gift ideas for older kids – those who are able to understand the value of collecting and making money by keeping a toy in pristine condition – and in its box.  If you’re considering giving a collector’s doll to a younger child, be aware that you (or the parent) might have to put the dolls away until the child is old enough to appreciate the gift for what it is, rather than for its "play" value.

Giving the gift of a collector’s doll can be a good option, but consider the situation carefully before you do so.  If you want your child to play toys from your favorite franchises, check out eBay or your local Thrift store.  You can very often find cheap bulk lots or big bags of ‘used’ collectors dolls, which are no longer in the box and so are safe for you child to play with without you worrying about your child ‘devaluing’ them.
