Helpful Household Tips for Making Consumer Electronics Purchases

Are you in the dark about what new electronic systems you should have?  Whether it’s gaming, HDTV, or speakers, there are many luxurious options for the home.  Before you get started buying the latest and greatest in consumer electronics, consider these tips.

1. Research the System

For starters, do your own research as to what consumer electronics are worth the money.  Don’t always believe the TV commercial guys. Instead, involve your entire family in the consumer electronics research project and determine what consumer electronics are truly worth the money.  Go to Google and enter the make and model number of your intended purchase (if you have already been to the store and looked at the item) plus the word ‘review.’ You’ll be surprised at what pops up.

2. Comparatively Shop

Do not buy the first consumer electronics system you come across.  Comparatively shop for the item, and consider all of the avenues: retail stores, online stores, pawnshops and local mom and pop stores.  Online, Buy.com and Amazon are King in terms of choice, shipping options and price comparison. Both offer user reviews. You may also consider the option of a refurbished system, which can be bought at most electronics stores and sometimes online.  These used consumer electronics sell for 25-50% less than suggested retail price.  Many of these systems have limited warranties, too.

3. Create a Budget in Advance

The worst mistake you can make is buying a new consumer electronics product without properly budgeting your funds.  You don’t want to spend half a week’s paycheck on a new consumer electronics product only to find out that you’re late on a monthly bill!  Start budgeting your expenses in advance.  If you have children, you may even consider teaching them the importance of personal sacrifice in budgeting.  As in, “if everyone in this family makes a few sacrifices, then we can get a new system here quicker!”

Remember these consumer electronics tips as you make room for your new home addition.
