How Often You Should Replace Your Mattress?

It is a hot-button topic in the sleep industry: how often should you replace your mattress?  Many experts will say that it should be replaced every eight to 10 years, but others recommend every five to seven years.  While you should really base your choice on the condition of your current mattress and how comfortable it is, there are some other things that you can take into account before you head to the mattress store.

First of all, has your lifestyle changed?  Are you sleeping more?  Have you been sleeping less?  Do you sit up in bed to read or do work on your laptop computer?  Have you recently moved?

Furthermore, how has your body changed over the years?  The way that our bodies change affects our mattresses and how long they last.  If you have lost weight or gained weight, you can add time or take time away from the longevity of your current mattress.  Are your arms or legs falling asleep in bed?  Do you have pain in your back when you wake up?  Your answer to both questions should be no.  If you answered yes, it may be time to consider switching.

It can be tough to part with what you have been sleeping on, but it does not have to be.  Turning mattresses over every few months increases their longevity.  When you are doing so, and when you’re changing your sheets, you should inspect it and monitor any changes.  Your box springs are important too, so keep those in mind when you’re looking at new mattresses.
