Should You Use a Harness to Train Your Cat?

If you live in the city or in an area where there are dangers that make it hard to simply let your cat roam outside, you will have to find new options.  Cats love the outdoors, but domesticated animals are not aware of the dangers that lurk outside their safe home.  A great part of cat training is teaching your cat to walk on a leash.  Here are a few cat training tips that will have your feline walking comfortably on a leash in no time.

The first thing that you will need to do is measure your cat’s chest and purchase a harness and leash.  Adjustable harnesses can be a great idea for younger cats.  Once the leash has been adjusted and is put on properly, your cat training can begin.

Start by simply allowing the cat to adjust to the harness.  Praise the cat for wearing it, and offer treats.  Once the cat has become comfortable in the harness, usually after a day or so, attach the leash and allow him or her to wander around.  When this is done, you are ready to start directing your cat and providing real cat training.

The last step of cat training when it comes to leashes is to learn to walk the animal.  Use treats if needed to convince the cat to follow you.  Do this for a few minutes out of each hour, and always be more affectionate when the cat is wearing the harness.  This will help the cat associate walks with treats and attention, and will make cat leash training a breeze.
