Stuck For a Gift on Mother’s Day? Try These 3 Easy Ideas

On Mother’s Day, most people are looking for traditional gift ideas that will make their mother feel happy and loved.  With so many different gifts to choose from, it can be difficult to pick the best one, often resulting in you panic-buying something that’s on sale at the last minute, and then worrying that the item doesn’t have a lot of thought or meaning.

To avoid this common problem, it’s a good idea to think in advance about what your mother enjoys, any activities or interests that she loves, or even past experience from previous Mother’s Days she’s particularly loved. Make a list, then you can begin the big decision about what present or gift you think she would like the most.

Some of the most popular gift ideas for Mother’s Day are hairdresser or spa gift certificates, manicure vouchers, and other such beauty treats. Cut flowers and chocolates are a traditional last-minute staple, but unless your mother is a chocolate connoisseur and you’ve just picked up a gift basket of truffles fresh from a trip to Switzerland, these are best avoided.  Any mother can spot such panic-bought ‘Gas Station Goods’ (as my mother calls them!) from a mile away!

If your mother seems stressed or worried lately, a day at the spa would offer her the chance to rest and relax.  This will help her calm her nerves and refresh her from the hectic duties of being a mom.  The same goes for a voucher or gift card for her local hairdresser, manicure parlor, or even a nearby beauty supply store.  What with the daily demands of being a mother, your Mom most likely puts herself last.  These gifts say "I want you to look and feel good,’ and will give her the guilty pleasure of indulging herself with a new hairdo, pretty painted nails or a basket of her favorite face-creams.

If your mother enjoys the springtime and is always out picking or planting flowers, a nice bouquet of her favorites will make a great gift for her.  If she loves to have colorful flowers or plants all over the house, getting her flowers will be a great way to brighten up the home and help her feel good. If your mother dislikes picked flowers and has her own garden, get her a flowering potted plant such as a miniature rose bush or orchid.  The flower is important – don’t give her any old plant without any flowers on as this is just a little bit too practical.  She’ll feel like it was a nice thought, but one that could’ve been given on any day.  All mothers secretly long for at least one flower on mother’s day!

If your mother has a sweet tooth and is always thinking of new ways to bake cakes or cookies, surprise her with a gift for her with one of her favorite desserts.  Drop by the corner bakery after work and pick up a few freshly made desserts, cookies or pastries.  Or, if you’re really ambitious, you can never go wrong with cooking dinner for the woman who gave you life!  Cook her favorite dish, with a few healthy sides.  Invite the whole family to honor her by helping out, and serve wine and a nice indulgent dessert.  During dinner, go around the table and have every family member say what they are most thankful for about your mother.  It’ll make for a memorable Mother’s Day, and a way for your mother to feel appreciated.

Then (this is the most important bit), have the whole family help with the washing up, and clean up the kitchen when you’re done so she can sit back and relax for once.  It will certainly be a mother’s day treat she’ll remember for a long time!
