Are Ankle Weights an Effective Way to Exercise?

For many years, people looking to get quality exercise while going about their daily routine were able to rely on ankle weights.  Ankle weights put added resistance on your legs, which helps you expend energy, build muscle, and get a better workout while just walking around.  The question that many people have, however, is whether or not ankle weights are still considered a useful way to get in a good day’s workout.

The answer to this question really depends on one thing.  How much walking do you do in an average day?  For many people, the prevalence of office jobs and the ability to communicate with coworkers via email or phone means that we are walking a lot less often than ever before.  Sitting at a desk with ankle weights on is certainly not a viable form of exercise, and will offer no benefit to your health at all.

With this said, it is important to realize that ankle weights can still be quite useful.  Instead of simply discarding them as useless, make an effort to walk more throughout your day.  Take the stairs instead of the elevator, park your car farther from the door, and walk to your coworkers rather than simply dialing their extensions.  These steps are easy to perform, and they can add a surprising amount of exercise to the average day.  If you want to get in better shape but don’t have time to go to the gym, wearing ankle weights and walking more can be quite beneficial.
