Gentle Exercise Regimens for Post Surgery Conditioning

When you have had major surgery, getting back into shape will certainly prove difficult.  During the recovery period following surgery, it is common to gain weight and to experience some degree of muscle atrophy.  The key is finding a way to get your body back into your regular exercise patterns safely and effectively.  When you find the best exercise regimen, you will find it much easier to recover your pre-operation body.

One thing you absolutely must do before you begin any post-surgery exercise routine is to speak with your doctor.  You want to be certain that your body has healed enough for the exercises you want to do.  With this in mind, let us look at a few gentle but effective ways to exercise following surgery.

One way to help condition your body without putting too much undue stress on your healing muscles is through yoga.  Yoga poses can be incredible for building muscle and losing weight, yet incredibly gentle and safe on the body.  Looking into these classes can be highly recommended.

Pilates is another great option.  It provides slightly more vigorous exercise than yoga while still remaining relatively gentle and safe on the body’s muscles.  Of course, the right exercises for you will depend on the specific surgery you had.  If you had a shoulder operation, pull-ups might be ill advised, while crunches would certainly not be the right place to start shortly after abdominal surgery.

The best thing to do when looking to exercise after surgery is to speak with a physician.  Once you know what your body is capable of, you can find the best regimen to help get you back into shape.
