How Kickboxing Can Improve Your Fitness

Kickboxing is popular because it’s a good way to encourage better health and to improve your self-defense skills.  In some cases, martial arts such as Tae Kwon Do are used as the basis of a kickboxing class and may offer you significant insight into how to apply these skills in a bad situation.  The benefits, however, are far broader in scope than simply learning how to defend yourself.

  • Aerobic Health Benefits
Kickboxing has tremendous benefits for aerobic health.  People who haven’t studied it before probably aren’t aware of it, but throwing a kick or punch takes a tremendous amount of energy.  When you do it repeatedly as part of a workout, it increases your heart rate and burns calories.  It also stretches your muscles and improves your coordination a great deal.
  • Free Sparring
In some cases, the kickboxing class will include some free sparring.  This is a great way to learn how much your skills have developed and how you might use them in a self-defense situation.  Learning how to throw forceful kicks or punches from a proper stance helps you to center your weight and to understand how to keep your balance when you’re doing any other type of activity.
  • Psychological Health Improvements
While this may not seem like something that directly increases your physical health, it does increase your mental health by giving you more confidence.  It will also make you feel better about your ability to defend yourself, should you ever have the need.  The psychological health definitely has benefits for your physical health and is particularly good for those who oftentimes feel intimidated by aggressive people.

Overall, kickboxing is a great aerobic exercise for those who don’t like to go to the gym and want to do something that has more uses than simply providing a workout.
