How to Avoid Injury During Exercise

Exercise is a vital part of living a long life, and will help ensure that you remain healthy.  However, if you do not exercise in the right way or follow the correct safety tips, you can be faced with a serious injury.  Here are four of the best ways to avoid an injury during exercise.

Stretch

First, it’s crucial to always stretch before any workout, whether it be preparing to lift weights or run.  Your muscles will be more inclined to have an injury if they’re not flexible and hydrated.  Also, make sure you listen to your body during your exercise routine.  If your body is telling you that “it hurts,” then you are doing something wrong.  Exercise should not be painful, and you should not have to “work through the pain.”

Follow Instructions

In addition, you need to make sure that you are performing your exercise correctly.  Whether you are using free weights or doing cardio, going about it the wrong way can be dangerous.  Ask for help from a trainer, and don’t be afraid to get advice from someone already on the machine.

Avoid Excessive Exercise

Another important tip is to avoid injuries from overdoing it.  Too much exercise can be just as bad as too little.  If you struggle to finish a set, you might just be doing too much.  To help ensure that you do not injure yourself during your workout, make sure that you get plenty of rest and keep your body hydrated.  Your body needs time off to heal and grow new tissue.

Take Your Time

Finally, you need to make sure that you increase your exercise intensity over a gradual period.  If you increase the intensity of your exercise too quickly, you will definitely injure yourself.  Take it slow and increase the intensity at regular intervals, but make sure those intervals are spaced out properly.

If you have an injury or are unable to continue exercising, it’s important to allow your body to heal and spend time in physical therapy to continue exercising and maintaining your health.
