How to Help a New Mother Adjust to Her New Life

If you have a newborn in the house, there is a mighty good chance that Mom is exhausted from all of the tasks that come with mothering the little one.  Other members of the family should start to pick up the slack and help around the house so Mom can keep her sanity.  Everyone in the family, from the baby’s siblings to Dad, should be helping, so grab your cleaning supplies and get stuck in!

Make Mom Rest!

Firstly, you need to make sure that Mom gets plenty of rest.  Being up with a baby and nursing can take its toll on the human body, and sleep is usually the first thing that falls by the wayside.  Dad should take the baby into another room whenever mom is resting so she can get a few uninterrupted hours of sleep.  If the mother isn’t nursing, older siblings under supervision can take turns feeding their baby brother or sister.  The same goes for changing.  Mom shouldn’t be the only one having all the ‘fun!’

Teach the Kids to Pitch In

If the other children in the house are too little to help with the chores relating to the new baby, they can learn to do other things.  Make sure that they pick up any mess in their room, and teach them how to do some little chores like dusting.  Dad and the older kids should make sure that they are taking care of the other household chores such as vacuuming, doing the dishes, cooking and taking out the trash.

Pack Mom off to a Day Spa

To give the new mother a break, make sure she gets out of the house every once in a while.  Offer to babysit one afternoon, and pack her off to a movie.  Every lady loves to be pampered, so why not help restore her frazzled nerves and tired body with a pampering spa treatment?  Most towns have a spa clinic where you can get everything from a mani-pedi to hot stone massage treatments and seaweed wraps.  Ask her friends to pitch in to help pay, your reward will be the happy and rested smile on her face when she returns!

Every little bit that you are able to do to help with the new baby will make for a peaceful household, and a happy new mother.
