How to Lower Your Risk of Prostate Cancer

While there are certain drugs that are shown to help lower the risk of prostate cancer, many men want to know what they can do to help themselves in other ways.

The way we eat can play a large role in preventing prostate cancer.  Eating healthy foods such as tomatoes and watermelon that are rich in lycopene can certainly be beneficial.  In fact, upping your intake of fruits and vegetables as a whole is one of the best steps to take, and studies show that good nutrition can significantly reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

Diet isn’t the only change you can make, though.  Taking low-dose aspirin has proven to also be effective in helping reduce prostate cancer risks.  This is especially true for men with enlarged prostate glands, as it can reduce inflammation and help stop abnormal growth.

If you take a multivitamin, ensuring that you take only one per day is actually important, as taking too many can actually increase your risk.

Maintaining a healthy weight, abstaining from smoking, and even exercising can help lower your risk.  When you maintain a healthy lifestyle, you will find that there is a much lower risk of prostate cancer, even for those with genetic and age-related risk factors.  Consult your doctor and make sure you have a yearly prostate exam if you are over the age of 50.
