How to Protect Your Eyes From Common Sun Damage

Eye protection is necessary because of the damaging UV rays that bombard you even on cloudy days.  The sun has a high level of light intensity and can cause retinal damage.  Inadequate protection can lead to vision problems as you get older such as macular degeneration and cataracts.  It is important that you purchase eye protection in order to maintain healthy eyes now and in the future.

Sunglasses

One of the most traditional forms of eye protection is sunglasses.  A pair of sunglasses will provide shade for your eyes to filter out the harmful rays in sunlight.  Sunglasses come in a wide variety of models, colors and designs.  You are able to match your personal tastes to the eye protection that you buy.  Customizing your sunglasses with your Optometrist’s recommendations can enhance your facial features so you look years younger.

Hats

While you are out in the sun, always wear sun hats that will provide you with an additional layer of shading.  Since sunglasses can still allow light to come in from the sides, it is important that you have more eye protection.  As with sunglasses, hats can be customized to complement your wardrobe and your style.  Using a hat or visor can also prevent bad sunburns, particularly on your scalp, where you may not notice that you have actually burned your scalp through any finer hair or partings.

Sight Diversion

It is also important to use natural eye protection methods such as diverting your sight from bright sunlight.  You should always avoid looking directly at the sun, and never look at the sun through binoculars or the zoom lens of a camera. Protecting your eyes will allow you to enjoy having full vision when you get older.
