How to Soothe a Burnt Tongue

Having a burnt tongue is a very painful experience, and you want to find relief for the pain as soon as possible.  Although it’s tempting to visit a doctor and cry for help, there are plenty of ways that you can help your poor tongue to feel better and heal faster so you can get back to enjoying your favorite foods.

Ice

As soon as you burn your tongue, you will want to apply something cold right away.  You can use ice cubes, an ice pack, a Popsicle or ice cream.  You want to make sure that you apply the cold to the affected area of your tongue for at least a full minute.  A great option is to use yogurt if you have it on hand.  Many find that it works much better than all of the other types of home remedies available.

Cough Drops

Sucking on menthol cough drops is also a good idea.  The menthol can help to numb the area of the tongue so you won’t feel as much pain.  Similarly, a topical anesthetic that you can find in the drug store is a good option, but you need to make sure that it is for oral purposes.

Your tongue is going to be sensitive until it heals completely.  You will want to eat slowly and make sure that all of your food is cool before you eat.  While you are waiting for your tongue to heal, you will want to stay away from certain types of food that can exacerbate the problem, like vinegary and acidic foods; so unfortunately, you’ll have to skip eating your favorite Indian food until next week.
