Important Exercise and Fitness Tips for Women Over the Age of 50

For women over fifty years of age, fitness becomes even more important.  If you have been active in your earlier life, then you certainly have an advantage here.  However, even women who were not active in fitness before turning fifty can gain some important benefits here by following a few simple doctor-recommended tips.

 

One of the most important fitness tips for women in this age bracket is to do lots of aerobic exercise.  This raises your heart rate and helps to burn off excess calories.  Generally, women are encouraged to do about twenty minutes of aerobic exercise each day.  Walking, jogging, running and many other options exist here to help you improve your fitness.

 

Strength training is also important for women over the age of fifty, which can be done at home or at the gym.  This not only helps maintain and increase lean muscle mass, but will help prevent osteoporosis, as well.  For this fitness option, you can use smaller free weights that are held in the hand.  Even only ten or twelve reps will improve your fitness considerably.

 

One of the most important fitness tips for women over fifty is to stretch regularly.  Not only is this important for warming up your muscles before doing any sort of physical exercise, but you will find that it has important health benefits as well.  Stretching is important to your fitness by increasing your flexibility and maintaining your range of motion.  You’ll find that yoga offers good benefits here, as does Pilates.
