Learn Some Good Tips for Keeping Children Active

How do you keep your children active? Well, the most reasonable answer to such a question is to “teach by example.” This means that active children tend to come from active parents. If you want your children to step away from their computers, TVs and mobile devices in order to enjoy a bit of physical activity each day, you have to do so yourself.

Instead of planning all of your exercise or workouts around your children and their schedules, make a point of incorporating them into your routine. For example, one great tip for keeping children active is to plan one family event during the weekend. This might be some organized yard work, a family hike, or even a trip to the beach. Either way, you are getting your children away from the things that might otherwise prevent them from being active, and also demonstrating that shared activity is fun and healthy for everyone.

Many parents also challenge their children to be active. For instance, if you have noticed that  your children are watching too many hours of TV or staying too long on the computer, you might offer them a reward of some sort for doing some physical activity instead. For instance, if they ride their bike for the half hour that they normally spend watching TV, they get some sort of reward. Or you could give them a daily task with a benefit to them, such as telling them that if they ride their bike to the corner shop and get you a grocery item each day, they can also buy themselves something with the leftover money.

Is it a good idea to “bribe” children to be active? Once someone gets into the habit of inactivity, including children, it takes a huge amount of effort to get out of such a comfortable routine. We all make the mistake of thinking that young people are just full of boundless energy, when in fact they might be prone to lounging around and can easily become overweight.

We can really motivate our children into action by serving as a good example, and offering encouragement when they break out of any bad habits where physical activity is concerned.
