Natural Remedies for a Stuffy Nose

A stuffy nose can make everything feel miserable.  We’ve all had one, and we all know that they are no fun.  They make it hard to breathe, hard to enjoy eating and drinking, and they just make life generally unpleasant.  Before you head to the drugstore and reach for that bottle of cold medicine or nasal spray, consider using a natural remedy to treat your stuffy nose.

The Steam Cure

A great remedy for a stuffy nose is to inhale steam by standing in a hot shower. Also, try hanging your head over a pot of boiling water for a few minutes with a towel draped around you to trap the steam.  Adding eucalyptus or apple cider vinegar to the water can help to further clear and drain the nasal passages.

Neti Pot

A neti pot can also be a great remedy for a stuffy nose.  These pots are filled with warm water and a simple salt solution to gently flush the nasal cavity and restore breathing.  They can be picked up in most pharmacies and natural food stores.

Spice it Up

If you need to eat, consider eating spicy foods.  Hot chili peppers will make your stuffy nose start running and clear you up within minutes.  If you need something a bit subtler, consider sipping a hot liquid, such as chicken soup.  The fluid will help dilute the mucus and rehydrate you while the steam helps get things flowing.

A stuffy nose may not be a lot of fun, but it can be easy to remedy.  Don’t run for the cold medicine right off the bat.  You might just find that a natural remedy is not only safer, but more effective.
